Before reaching for any of them, it's worth understanding exactly what sleep problem you're trying to solve, because mismatching the wrong supplement to the wrong problem is the most common reason people conclude 'it doesn't work for me.'

The key difference: melatonin regulates the biological CLOCK (when the body 'thinks' it's bedtime), while magnesium and L-theanine act more on general tension and nervous-system arousal, regardless of the time of day. That's why melatonin is most effective for rhythm-related problems (like jet lag), not as a universal 'sleeping pill.'

Melatonin: a clock, not a sleeping pill

Melatonin is a hormone naturally released by the pineal gland in response to falling darkness — as a supplement, it works best as a signal to the body that 'it's bedtime now,' not as an agent that forces sedation. That's the key difference from sleep medications: melatonin doesn't 'knock you out,' it shifts or reinforces the natural circadian-rhythm signal, which is why it works best when that rhythm is genuinely disrupted, as with travel across time zones or shift work.

Myth vs. Fact: does more melatonin work better

Myth

If 1 mg of melatonin didn't work, it's worth taking 5 or 10 mg just to be safe.

Fact

Studies on melatonin consistently show that low doses (0.5–3 mg) are just as effective, or more effective, than high doses — excess melatonin doesn't improve the effect, and instead raises the risk of morning grogginess and may disrupt the body's natural rhythm of releasing this hormone.

Because melatonin, magnesium, and L-theanine work through different mechanisms, they can in theory be used together without significant interactions — but before reaching for all three at once, it's worth first checking whether a single supplement, well matched to your specific problem, is already enough.

I most often see patients reaching for melatonin for a problem it doesn't solve — because their issue isn't a disrupted circadian rhythm, just ordinary evening tension.
